Unique Mandala Ring Dish – Hand crafted with peaceful blues - Craft a Life with Seravida Art
Read Time:1 Minute, 53 Second

A 15cm diameter ring dish with a mandala design in beautiful blues.

The mould is from Devon Dotting, and is the small 15cm tray. I use this a lot – it doesn’t use a lot of plaster and sets really really quickly because it is thin. However you really need to keep an eye on the mould being laid really flat during and after the pour.

Moulding

I use Herculite 2 for the plaster in my moulds, but it dries incredibly quickly. So, get everything ready to start with: space, the mould ready and flat, a small pointy thing to ensure that you have no bubbles or air gaps in the plaster, a measuring jug or equivalent, a mixing bucket, spoon (or something to mix your plaster that wont put lots of air in it, but still enable quick mixing), water and your plaster.

Once your area is ready, mix the plaster and water per the instructions on the packet. When poured, tap the sides of the mould firmly all around to encourage any air pockets to come to the surface. You must do this quickly though as I can not emphasize enough how quickly this plaster starts to dry!

Leave to airdry on a flat surface overnight and then remove from the mould.

I suggest leaving a week before painting. Some items take significantly longer, but with this mould the plaster isn’t thick at any point, so a week will be enough.

Guidelines

For this design, an 6 / 12 segment pattern template is needed – or measure it out using a protractor. Chalk pencil is ideal for this as once your paint dries, you can just wipe it off using a damp clothe, or wet wipe.

Painting

This design has a simple palette of blue and grey with a silver accent. I mostly used brushes for the handpainting of this design. I use brushes by @thoughtfuldots

Once painted, top and bottom, seal it with an acrylic sealer. I used the decoart matt varnish painted on with a brush.
